Second expedition

Dates:

Location:
Naggar village (Himachal Pradesh, Kullu District). We also visited the cities of Kullu and Manali, as well as the villages of Nashala and Kararsu.

We have:
  • Interviewed all the suggested informants to examine their language competence and general language situation in Naggar filling in 25 detailed sociolinguistic questionnaires;
  • Written down a thesaurus of about 1,200 words;
  • Recorded and transcribed several detailed grammatical questionnaires;
  • Recorded more than 30 meaningful texts of different categories (fairy tales, legends, stories, everyday conversations), including several video recordings; 10 texts were transcribed along with the native speakers. In total, there are several hours of audio recordings;
  • Established contacts with local scholars and researchers of the Kullui language Dr. Mauluram Thakur and Dr. Dayanand Sharma (Saraswat). Our meetings were organized by Ms. Promila Guleria, Director of the Department of Language and Culture of Kullu District;
  • Made video recordings of wedding customs in the village of Naggar;
  • Examined a private collection of ancient books in Pahari.

Third expedition

We have:
  • Collected questionnaires on different aspects of the Kullui grammar;
  • Gathered preliminary material on dialects spoken in the Kullu valley and other Himachali dialects;
  • Recorded a number of Kullui texts on holidays, traditions and customs of the Kullu valley;
  • Conducted an interview with Dr. Surat Thakur, a writer and researcher of Himachali culture folklore. The interview was organized by Ms. Promila Guleria, Director of the Department of Language and Culture of Kullu District;
  • Made photo and video recordings of Dushera holiday in Kullu;
  • Acquired digital copies of texts in the tankri script.

Fourth expedition

We have:
  • Determined the areal of the Kullui language;
  • Obtained new data on phonology and grammar;
  • Collected or clarified about 500 lexems;
  • Translated 12 audio and video recordings with the help of local people;
  • Collected 40 sociolinguistic questionnaires;
  • Held a sociolinguistic inquiry among local children;
  • Collected new questionnaires for isoglosses from speakers of different Himachali idioms.

Fifth expedition

Sixth expedition

Seventh expedition

  • Material on the section “word formation” for grammar has been collected
  • Semantic, phonetic and grammatical gaps in the dictionary have been filled
  • Grierson’s data on Kullui speakers in Kangra district has been verified and basic data on their dialect has been obtained
  • Gaps in the “Morphology” section have been filled
  • Gaps in the “Syntax” section have been filled
  • The dialect material of the village Sachani has been obtained
